Jamaican Recipe of the Day: Johnny Cakes (Fry Dumplings)

Now, this is considered a staple in Jamaican homes. It is mainly prepared for breakfast, but it can also be served any time of the day. Enjoy this week’s Jamaican Recipe of the Day, Johnny cakes or as you might know it, fry dumpling.

Jamaican Recipe of the Day: Johnny Cakes (Fry Dumplings)

Ingredients:

2 cups  of flour
1 tsp. of baking powder
1/2tsp of baking soda
 1 tbs of butter
1/2 cup or 125. ml  of milk
1 cup of cold water A pinch of salt

Preparation :

  1. Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Then add the milk and cold water.
  3. Use your fingertips to mix until a dough is formed.
  4. On the stove, place the pot with 1/2 cup of oil and allow it to heat up.
  5. Separate dough in small pieces and roll in the palm of your hands until balls are formed.
  6. Then place in hot oil and allow to fry on both sides until golden brown for roughly 10 mins.
  7. It should be light and fluffy.
Serve them hot, by themselves, or with your choice of meat or vegetables. They go nicely with a bowl of porridge too.
