Treasures of Colombia: Oblea (Colombian Street Food)

Desserts are some of our favorite comfort foods and are enjoyed all around the globe.

This is normally eaten after dinner or lunch depending on your choice.

The Oblea is a traditional dessert that is famous in Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador, Venezuela, Mexico, and Greece. It is eaten any time of day and is sold on almost every street corner.

It is truly a Colombian street food.

Simply put, the Oblea is a wafer that is filled with many different delicious fillings depends on the country.

Here in Colombia, it has many different fillings such as Arequipe. This is a smooth, thick mixture made of caramelized milk and sugar, used as a spread or dessert topping.

Then there is also strawberry (fresa), Blackberry (mora), Sprinkles (confites de caramelo) and grated Cheese (queso).

The preparation is quite easy:

How to Prepare Oblea

FIRST: Take two wafers (flattened thin waffle cone).

THEN: Spread a generous amount of Arequipe onto one of the wafers.

NEXT: Add Sprinkles, Strawberry or Blackberry jam, Grated Cheese, Condensed milk and finely chopped Pineapple – to name a few toppings.

FINALLY: Close the topping filled wafer with another wafer like a sandwich and eat or serve.

All over Colombia children and adults alike can be seen enjoying the Oblea; whether they are walking in the park, through the streets or browsing the shopping malls there is always someone enjoying this delicious snack /dessert.

You can try your own Oblea by purchasing flattened wafer cones and add your own toppings consisting of jams and cheeses – add condensed milk as well if you have an extra sweet tooth.
